AmneziaVPN is a free, open-source app for running your own VPN. The project is built around self-hosting: you rent a server (VPS) from a hosting provider, the app installs a VPN on it, and you connect to your own server. The project also sells ready paid servers.
AmneziaWG (AWG) is a fork of the WireGuard protocol. Its speed and encryption come from WireGuard, with masking on top: junk packets before the handshake, altered headers and service-packet sizes. That makes the traffic look less like the WireGuard that filtering systems (DPI) look for.
The protocol evolves in generations: each new version adds ways to mask traffic, such as imitating packets of other protocols. The main practical rule is that client and server must support the same version, so both sides have to be updated.
AmneziaWG does its job well. But every WireGuard-based protocol shares a few limits, and no version removes them.
WireGuard and its forks run over UDP only. If a network cuts or throttles UDP, masking does not help: the packets simply never reach the server.
When the server's IP or a whole subnet is blocked, the protocol does not matter. On your own VPS you have to get a new address yourself and hand out the configurations again.
Renting the VPS, installing, updating versions on the server and in every app, changing the address after a block — all of it is done by you, in your own time.
